Indian cricketers in an emotional moment after winning the World Cup |
India: 176/7 in 20 overs
Result: India won by 7 runs
South Africa: 169/8 in 20 overs
30 runs were needed off 30 balls. Heinrich Klaasen brought the match almost in the hands of South Africa in one over. India's T20 World Cup final team-high of 176 for 7 seemed like an easy target. But Yashpreet Bumrah made that easy task difficult for them with incredible bowling. He reduced the equation to 16 runs in the last over by taking 1 wicket for just 6 runs in 2 overs in the death over.
The first ball of that over by Hardik Pandya was a foul. David Miller on strike also hit well. But Suryakumar Yadav's incredible relay catch on the long off boundary resulted in a sure six. Victory was then back in India's hands, as the crown of T20 supremacy once again rose to its head. Hardik Pandya didn't let that opportunity slip away in the last over.
Kagiso dismissed Rabada on the fifth ball of the over. After giving only 8 runs in the last over, South Africa's innings ended at 169 for 8. India won the T20 World Cup for the second time after 17 years with a 7-run win. The to begin with title was in the, to begin with, version of the T20 World Glass held in 2007.
Batting, South Africa's innings did not start well. Opener Riza Hendricks and three-man Aiden Markram were dismissed in the powerplay. As Quinton de Kock survived, however, the rivalry developed. South Africa scored 42 runs in the powerplay courtesy of the in-form left-arm opener. De Kock's job was made easy by youngster Tristan Stubbs.
He batted aggressively after coming to the crease. South Africa returned to the match with a pair of 58 runs from 38 balls. Patel broke the pair in the ninth over. He bowled Stubbs who scored 31 runs off 21 balls. De Kock's innings were not big either. The left-hander was dismissed for 39 runs off 31 balls in the 13th over bowled by Arshdeep.

Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller, however, did not let their absence be felt. Klaasen started the game with a strike rate of two hundred after coming to the crease. He reduced the ball and run difference in one over with explosive batting. South Africa required 54 runs to win from 36 balls sometime recently Patel's 15th over of the innings.
Taking 24 runs off Patel's over with 2 fours and 2 sixes, the equation came down to 30 runs off 30 balls. Klaasen completed his half-century in 23 balls in the next over. Classen cut behind in the 17th over by Pandya, but the match was still in the hands of the Proteas. Classen's innings stopped at 52 runs off 27 balls with 2 fours and 5 sixes.
The match began to turn from there. After Classen's departure, Bumrah took the Proteas by storm. Bowling 2 overs in the last spell, he gave only 6 runs and took one wicket. Yet South Africa was dreaming as Miller survived. But when 16 runs were needed for victory in the last over, Miller's innings of 21 runs off 17 balls came to an end when Hardik Pandya was dismissed.
Prior, India misplaced the wickets of Rohit and Rishabh Gasp at the start of the innings. Rohit, who was in great form, got out after scoring 9 runs off 5 balls with 2 fours in the brave and tactical bowling of left-arm spinner Maharaj. Maharaj did not have to wait long for the second wicket. At the end of that over, his flight was caught in the net by Pant (0). India's run was then 23/2 in 2 overs.
